ARTIST STAEMENT 2018

Still life painting has a long tradition it can be seen as a celebration of earthly pleasures or a warning of the ephemeral nature of these pleasures and one’s own mortality.

These traditions are still interesting to investigate and although my work draws on symbolism and vanitas traditions the relationship between the artist and society has fundamentally changed. I wish to reflect upon messages about the relationship between society, and its objects, and the range of meanings they embody, symbolic, moral, sexual, especially when considering the place and struggles of women in society today.

In my series I am interested in objects of desire, lavish bouquets of flowers and the trophy symbol incorporated in my work speak to the objectification of women, the complicated dialogue we have with feminism juxtaposed against the symbolism of the purity of flowers, domestic connotations, materialism, greed and ideas of momento mori.
